Otyken (Russian: ОТУКЕН) is a Siberian band formed in 2015 mixing folk and pop with traditional culture instruments. The members of the group are Chulym Khakas, a population of Eastern Siberia. They sing in Khakass, Chulyms and sometimes in Russian.
The mixture of traditional instruments (vargan or jaw harp, khomys, morinhur, leather drums), traditional songs (mystical throat singing) with pop rhythms and melodies creates a unique sound.
Their first two albums “Otyken”(2018) and “Lord of Honey” (2019) contain both mainstream songs, and indigenous throat singing, including “White moutain”. Since 2021, they have been incorporating more pop elements with modern arrangements and production such as on their third album “Kykakacha” or on the singles “Storm “or “Genesis”.
Originally, the group was formed and is funded by Andrey Medonos, creator of a YouTube channel to share chulym culture. The group is associated with Ethno-Honey, a store that sells Chulym honey. All profits from the store go to the development and sharing of Siberian culture and music.
